Bygdøy is a peninsula located on the west side of Oslo center known for the six most popular and most visited museums in the country. Bygdøy is a nice residential area for the well-off and it is also a popular recreational resort offering beaches, a beach volley ball court, several jogging and biking trails and restaurants. Museums we will visit:

  • The Viking ship museum which exhibits the three Viking ships Oseberg, Gokstad and Tune.
  • The Polar ship museum Fram that showcases the exciting history of the Norwegian polar explorers Fridtjof Nansen, Roald Amundsen and international polar explores like the British Robert Scott among others.
  • The Norwegian Open-Air Museum, also known as Folk museum, exhibits 150 buildings from all parts of Norway presenting the traditional way of living. There is also a Stave Church dated from 1200.
  • Optional museums on the peninsula are also: the Kon-Tiki, presenting the voyages of Thor Heyerdahl, or The Maritime Museum presenting the history of Norway as a sailing nation or the Holocaust museum presenting the history of the Jewish minority in Norway.

Return back to the city center by bus or ferry.
